(4) Exciting Articles on PCa (New targets Identified, DNA Regulator Stops Cancer in Their Tracks, Grape extract effective in Killing PCa Cells and Low-fat Diet, Omega-3 linked to Reduced PCa Aggression)

Hi Guys,

Article #1 is a very interesting article from Scientists at UT Southwestern Medical Center that have identified an important step toward potentially shutting down the growth of prostate cancer cells.  Article #2 expands on the benefits of the compound that was found to induce cancer cell death, known as apoptosis, but left healthy cells unharmed.  Article #3 deals with a DNA regulator, (PRH’s) they state that the findings could lead to new ways of combating the spread of the disease in multiple cancers!  Article #4 states that that men suffering from prostate cancer who took fish oil supplements alongside a low-fat diet demonstrated changes in their cancer tissue that may indicate reduced cancer aggression.

1)   Target identified for shutting down growth of prostate cancer cells  (Monday 10 March 2014)

“We now have a target that we could potentially exploit to develop a drug for treatment,” said Dr. Kittler, UT Southwestern’s first Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) Scholar in Cancer Research.  Full Story: Target identified for shutting down growth of prostate cancer cells

2)   Compound in grape seed extract ‘kills prostate cancer cells’

New research suggests that a component found in grape seed extract is effective in killing prostate cancer cells. This is according to a study published in the journal Nutrition and Cancer.  Investigators from the University of Colorado Cancer Center have analyzed the potential of grape seed extract (GSE) for its anti-cancer properties over the last 10 years.  But although previous research from the team has demonstrated its effectiveness against cancer cells and how it works, it was unknown as to which element of GSE produces these effects.  “This naturally occurring compound, GSE, is a complex mixture of polyphenols and, so far, it has been unclear about the biologically active constituents of GSE against cancer cells,” says Alpna Tyagi, of the University of Colorado Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Researchers have pinpointed a compound in grape seed extract called B2G2, which they discovered can successfully induce human prostate cancer cell death.  “In the new study, however, the researchers discovered that a component of GSE called B2G2 is the most active against cancer cells.  The compound was found to induce cancer cell death, known as apoptosis, but left healthy cells unharmed”.  Full Story: Compound in grape seed extract ‘kills prostate cancer cells’
3)   DNA regulator stops cancer in their tracks
“Understanding how and why cancer cells move away from their original location is important to find ways to stop the spread of the disease. New findings, published in the Nature journal Oncogene, reveal how a protein, called ‘PRH’, is normally able to prevent cells from unnecessary migration. It is likely that this protein is less effective in cancer cells allowing the cells to venture away”.  Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Birmingham, who have been studying breast and prostate cancer cells, show how manipulating PRH’s levels in cancer cells can hinder their ability to penetrate into neighbouring environments, potentially preventing them from entering nearby blood vessels. The findings could lead to new ways of combating the spread of the disease in multiple cancers”.  Full Story: DNA regulator stops cancer cells in their tracks
4)   Low-fat diet, omega-3 linked to reduced prostate cancer aggression

‘A follow-up study reveals that men suffering from prostate cancer who took fish oil supplements alongside a low-fat diet demonstrated changes in their cancer tissue that may indicate reduced cancer aggression.  This is according to research published in the journal Cancer Prevention Research.   For this most recent study, the investigators wanted to determine exactly how the low-fat fish oil diet works to produce the effects found in their previous research.  Therefore, they measured the levels of pro-inflammatory substances in the blood and analyzed the men’s prostate cancer tissue in order to find out their cell cycle progression (CCP) scores – a measure of aggression within prostate cancer cells used to determine a patient’s likelihood of recurrence”.  Full Story:  Low-fat diet, omega-3 linked to reduced prostate cancer aggression

    • Hi Bob, Hope abounds with every new potential breakthrough article. Many researchers are working very hard to help us bring an end to this dreaded cancer. I too find hope in all the progress that is being made. Keep strong!

  1. Time to add grape seed extract in the form of wine to your daily consumption. Also time to,have FUN and DANCE! Like your post. Knuffles, b
