Article #1 is a promising new breakthrough from Irving Weissman and his team at Stanford that have developed a treatment capable of killing cancer cells while leaving healthy cells largely unharmed. The new treatment acts on the protein CD47, a protein found on the surface of cancer cells that essentially says “don’t eat me” to a person’s immune system. CD47 tricks the immune system of someone with cancer into letting tumors continue to grow. This is just opening up clinical trial 1 for patients! Article #2 from the Mayo Clinic deals with Genome guided therapeutic trials for cancer.
1) Breakthrough Cancer Treatment Has Potential To Kill All Types Of Tumors March 31, 2014
“The groundbreaking therapy has proven incredibly effective in animal testing so far. To test the treatment on human cancers, researchers implanted human cancer tumors in to mice. In the absence of treatment, these tumors would continue to grow in the mice. But this all changed when the CD47 antibody was used. The new cell therapy cured or shrunk human strands of breast, ovary, colon, bladder, brain, liver, and prostate tumors during trials”. 2) Genome-guided therapeutic trials offer new hope Vol. 3, Issue 1, 2014
“With the availability of more comprehensive human genome data from sources such as The Cancer Genome Atlas, clinicians are now able to rapidly and inexpensively sequence an individual patient’s tumors. The result is new opportunities for researchers to conduct therapeutic trials for many types of cancer. The Mayo Clinic Cancer Center took its first steps in this direction nearly two years ago when we launched our first genome-guided protocol in a neoadjuvant trial for newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. We have just launched a similar approach for prostate cancer, and we plan to extend this approach to other malignancies”. Full Story: Genome-guided therapeutic trials offer new hope.
It seems to me that the future defeating prostate cancer and many other cancers will depend on how well we develop Immuno, Genome, targeted, Individualizing cancer treatment and vaccine therapy’s!
